Government's broadband expansion plans 'wrong'

The government's recent Digital Britain proposals have outlined plans to expand Britain's broadband capabilities, but are going about it in the wrong way.

That is the view of Edd Dawson, managing director of broadband.co.uk, who said that the 50p levy, which the government plans to impose on fixed phone lines, is not the correct way to raise the funds for superfast connections.

He said: "We think that it is right that the government is trying to get involved in their support but the amount of money they will raise is a pittance really.

"It really has to be a direct investment; it doesn't necessarily have to be taken directly from consumers. It is an infrastructure investment for the whole of the country."<br/> <br/>According to data released by the Office for National Statistics, 16 million households in Great Britain have internet access to the internet in 2008, which represents a seven per cent increase over the last year.<br/>
