The number of households with broadband across the US has grown by around 15 per cent over the past 12 months, new figures show.
According to the latest Pew Internet Project, some 63 per cent of American adults now have broadband connections in their own home, far more than was initially predicted.
Furthermore, of those who do not have home broadband, around one in five are still not connected as the relevant technology is still not available in their area, rather than out of choice.
As with the UK and Europe, researchers believe that this growth, at a time of economic worry for many, shows the degree to which households now prioritise web access.
John B Horrigan, associate director of the Pew Internet Project, noted: "For many Americans a home broadband connection is a conduit for connecting to community and economic opportunity.
"That puts broadband in the 'must keep' category for most users, even when economic times are tough."
These latest figures come after the Broadband Forum revealed that the UK now has 17.7 broadband users, making it the sixth largest national user of the technology in the world. <br/>
