UK broadband subscriptions still boom during recession

More than a million new users signed up to a broadband internet subscription in the last year.

That is according to a new report by Broadband Forum, which shows a total of 17,661,100 UK broadband customers as of the first quarter of 2009.

This represents a rise of more than a million year-on-year, leaving Britain as the sixth biggest nation in terms of numbers of broadband users.

Worldwide, DSL connections were the most popular accounting for more than 64 per cent of all connections.

Chairman and president of Broadband Forum, George Dobrowski, said: "This report shows that despite the economic situation the world is facing, the demand for both broadband and IPTV continues at pace as people everywhere look to improve the quality and speed of their communications."

The government announced yesterday (June 16th) a £200 million funding boost to help achieve a universal 2 Mbps broadband connection in Britain by 2012.<br/>
