IT skills 'as essential as the ability to read'

The Digital Britain report, published by the government yesterday (June 16th), has highlighted the need for youngsters to get adequate IT training.

That is according to chief executive of e-skills Karen Price, who said that because the world is "increasingly technology-enabled" IT skills are vital for employment prospects and "social inclusion".

She said "Everyone needs IT skills; they have become as essential as the ability to read, write and understand basic mathematics. Our research indicates that more than 90 per cent of new jobs now require some level of IT skills."

According to a report released by Baroness Estelle Morris yesterday (June 16th) 11.6 million people in Britain lack basic IT skills.

The groups most likely to be computer illiterate are those with few qualifications, the elderly and individuals who are socially excluded.

A Communications Consumer Panel report issued on June 3rd stated that 80 per cent of respondents believed that people should have access to the skills needed to utilise broadband at home.<br/>
