Danger for firms reducing IT spend during recession

Businesses which cut back on IT spending during the recession are risking the future of their organisations when the economy recovers.

That is according to head of marketing at the National Computer Centre, Michael Dean, who claimed that companies of any size have got the opportunity to use IT to improve performance and decrease costs.

Mr Dean said: "The danger in a recession is that organisations don't invest in IT and when the upturn comes they are less competitive than others."

IT advisory company Gartner corroborated this view recently (June 3rd), advising businesses to prepare for growth.

Vice president and fellow for Gartner, Ken McGee, said: "Waiting until that new demand arrives will be far too late to appropriately meet it, and we are recommending that companies start preparing for business growth now."

The Ardent Solutions Small to Medium Enterprise Business Technology Report 2009, published on June 8th also stated that 23 per cent of SMEs admitted that a limited IT budget would affect the competitiveness of their company.<br/>
