BT Wholesale

All Key Parts of the BT Group

Operating in more than 170 countries, BT Group is one of the world’s leading providers of communications solutions and services. Its principal activities include networked IT services, local, national and international telecommunications services, and higher value broadband and internet products and services.

BT is made up of a number of inter-dependent and inter-related business units, namely:

Market facing units or lines of business.

  • BT Retail typically looks after the needs of consumer and SME customers in both the UK and Ireland.
  • BT Global Services is responsible for corporate or enterprise customers, which are typically large, multi-site organisations and often operate, and require BT’s services, across multiple markets worldwide.
  • Openreach is responsible for the most heavily regulated assets and products BT provides to other communications providers in the UK - typically things like our access network that other communications provider customers could not build themselves economically.
  • BT Wholesale offers more than 700 communications companies a portfolio of wholesale products and services, a range of managed solutions and increasingly soft-ware driven, web 2.0 services.  BT Wholesale has established itself as a long-term strategic business partner to its customers, contributing to their efficiency and competitiveness and helping them exploit the inherent opportunities of next generation communications services.

Operational and design units

  • BT Design is responsible for BT’s business systems and processes, much of which, like billing and the management of customer records, are dependant on software-based systems.  BT Design also supports the design and delivery of new products and services on behalf of the lines of business.
  • BT Operate is closely aligned to BT Design.  It is responsible for running BT’s core infrastructure and platforms - with the exception of our access network in the UK, for which Openreach is responsible.  It brings together BT’s world class network IT and network management capabilities so that efficiency and economies of scale can be achieved and maintained.
